The Pink Cloud

In partnertship with Cinema Mentire, we are excited to present The Pink Cloud, the acclaimed debut film by director Iuli Gerbase , which had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.
A mysterious and deadly pink cloud appears across the globe, forcing everyone to stay home. Strangers at the outset, Giovana and Yago try to invent themselves as a couple as years of shared lockdown pass. While Yago is living in his own utopia, Giovana feels trapped deep inside.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A in-person with the director.

Enough with Catcalling (directed by Amanda Kamancheck and Fernanda Frazão) illustrates how the participation of women in open urban spaces is marked by insecurity and harassment. This was our first screening and we raised money for Latin American Women's Aid, a charity working with Latin American women that have experienced gender-based violence in London. -
My Body is Political

Tranny Fag

Tranny Fag (directed by Claudia Priscilla and Kiko Goifman) is a film about Brazilian artist Linn da Quebrada, a trans woman who uses herself and her art to fight sexism, transphobia, racism and the status-quo. 50% of the box office went to Ateliê TRANSmoras, a collective that empowers the Trans community in Brazil. -
Housemaids

Housemaids (directed by Gabriel Mascaro) is a documentary where seven young people film their families' housemaids providing us with a rare insight into the echoes of a colonial past that lingers in contemporary Brazilian households. All the money raised went to Carta Manifesto - For the Lives of Our Mothers, who distributed the money among those in most need in Brazil during the covid pandemic. -
3 Short Stories about Domestic Violence

This session held during the covid-19 pandemic showed 3 short films (I Tried by Laís Melo, Restauration by Natalia Keiko, and Breaking the Silence by Julia Lima) that portray the claustrophobic nature of domestic abuse, but also the courage of survivors, the process of healing through art and community and the indispensable support of friends and estate workers. All the money raised went to Women's Circle Apadrinhe um Sorriso (Sponsor a Smile), that empowers women to flee domestic abuse and their children to engage in cultural acitivies. -
Outskirts Visionaires

Outskirts Visionaries (directed by Ana Carolina Martins) is a film that explores the creative and vibrand potential of São Paulo's favelas through the narratives of 10 amazing locals who have created initiatives that are changing their communities. All the money raised went to Scub (Street Child United Brazil), a football for development program at the favela Complexo da Penha in Rio de Janeiro. -
Ex-Shaman

Ex-Shaman (directed by Luiz Bolognesi) tells the story of the Paiter Suruí, an indigenous community in Brazil who had no contact with the Western world up to 1969. Perpera, a former shaman, looks for a way to restore the culture of his community and their existential values whilst being exposed to deep social changes. 70% of the box office went to Metareilá Association of the Paiter Suruí, working in defense and preservation of cultural and territorial heritage of indigenous people. -
Faith and Fury

Faith and Fury (directed by Marcos Pimentel) addresses the conflicting interface between religion, crime and power in the favelas of the country's major urban centers and the growing conservative wave that has hovered over Brazil in recent years. 60% of the money raised went to CEAP (Centro de Populações Marginalizadas), an organisation that fights against religious intolerance and racism in Rio de Janeiro. -

Threshold

Threshold (directed by Coraci Ruiz) is an autobiographical documentary made by a mother who follows the gender transition of her teenage son. 50% of the money raised went to CasaNem, an organisation that does amazing work empowering and housing LGBTQ+ people in Rio de Janeiro. -
Black and White Democracy

This screning was organised together with a Brazilian party to celebrate 3 years of Cine Brazil. As it fell just after the first round of the Brazilian elections, we chose to screen Black and White Democracy (directed by Pedro Asbeg), a film that investigates a fascinating period in Brazilian history: the transition from dictatorship to democracy. After the film, we had DJ Limão playing the best of Brazilian music and Vic Diamente with an incredible performance. -
Uyra

We were invited by London Film Week to host a screening at their festival at The Garden Cinema. We chose to screen Uyra (directed by Juliana Cury), a documentary that shows an trans-indigenous artist who travels through the Amazon forest on a journey of self-discovery using performance art and ancestral messages to teach indigenous youth and confront structural racism and transphobia n Brazil. -
The Last Forest

This event was done in collaboration with Brazilian friends and activits to send support to the Yanomami, one of the largest indigenous groups in South America, who are facing genocide. We screened The Last Forest (directed by Luiz Bolognesi),a film that documents the life of the Yanomami community and their threatened natural environment in the Amazon forest. All proceedings went to Hutukara, an organisation formed by the Yanomami to defend their rights and run their projects. -
Letters to Angola

Letters to Angole (directed by Julio Mattos and Coracy Ruiz) highlights seven pairs of voices between Brazil, Angola and Portugal where people share many similarities from speaking the same languages to having a common colonial past. Their search for identity and memory binds these life stories together shedding light to a shared history, both past and present. 50% of the money raised went to Associação dos Angolanos, a charity providing support to migrants from Angola in the south of Brazil. -
Piripkura

Piripkura (directed by Bruno Jorge and Renata Terra) is a documentary about the last two surviving members of the Piripkura indigenous people, a nomadic tribe in the Amazon rainforest. 50% of the money raised went to The Free Land Camp (Acampamento Terra Livre), the largest mobilisation of indigenous peoples in Brazil which has been taking place every year in April since 2004. After the film, Brazil Matters and Observatory for the Human Rights of Isolated and Recent Contact Indigenous Peoples (OPI) discussed the largest threats faced by isolated indigenous people in Brazil and what needs to be done to guarantee their survival. -
Sócrates

After the sudden death of his mother, 15 year-old Socrates finds himself alone and desperate to pay rent, buy food and find work. He is left to deal with his homophobic father, who he hasn't seem in years, as he explores his sexuality, deals with grief and navigates life in the outskirts of São Paulo.
50% of the money raised will go to Instituto Queró, an amazing charity empowering vulnerable young people through cinema -
Cursed Legacy: From Colonisation to Neoliberalism

The documentary examines the disastrous toll the mining industry has taken on communities and ecosystems in Brazil. The screening was followed by a panel discussion on the topic in partnership with Brazil Matters, London Mining, Amazonia Alerta and Atingidos por Barragens.

Èṣù and the Universe

Èṣù is a popular African deity of thousands of years and we might never know its exact origin. But it is possible to understand how Èṣù went from being a God in Africa to becoming the Devil in Brazil. This tragic story, that passes through colonization and slavery, has not ended yet. Èṣù and the Universe (2022) follows the complex path of a culture turned into resistance over the course of several centuries.

The Invention of the Other

The Invention of the Other is a documentary about one of the most important missions ever undertaken into the depths of the Amazon rainforest to try to find and establish contact with a group of isolated indigenous people aiming to promote a delicate reunion with part of the family already contacted a few years earlier. Bruno Pereira, who would later be murdered in the same region and become an international symbol in favour of indigenous people and the forest, is leading the expedition.
